Whether or not you choose to use your insurance benefits is entirely up to you. However, even those with insurance sometimes choose to utilize the self-pay option. Some reasons for this include:
  1. Privacy. Please keep in mind that when a therapist submits a claim to the insurance company, a diagnosis must be made in order for the insurance company to reimburse the provider. This diagnosis may become an official part of your medical chart and can be accessed by other medical providers. Also keep in mind that some jobs (particularly those dealing with national security in some capacity) may ask to access these records as part of the application process. By utilizing a self-pay option, there does not have to be a diagnosis and if there is one, this information is kept confidential between the therapist and the patient.
  2. Time. If you’ve done therapy before, you may wonder why therapist talk about an hourly rate, then start fastidiously watching the clock at 40 minutes. This is because insurance companies usually only reimburse for 45-50 minute sessions and therapist may have to absorb the cost for any time spent after that. When you self-pay, the therapist will have more flexibility regarding extra time due to there not being restraints imposed by insurance companies. If you need an extra 15-30 minutes you and your therapist can negotiate a rate if you choose to do so.
  3. Freedom. When accepting insurance, therapists are often bound by the rules/regulations of the insurance company. This can inhibit options between the therapist and client and prevent the therapeutic process from being tailored to each individual. Many insurance companies will only reimburse for a particular treatment modality (i.e. While you may benefit most from a mindfulness-based approach, regulations by insurance companies may only allow the therapist to utilize cognitive behavioral therapy). Insurance companies also often limit the number of sessions the therapist can provide. While 10 sessions may be sufficient all one client, another may need several more, but would be ineligible to obtain them due to insurance restrictions.
